Periodontal Disease Overview

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, moderate periodontitis among adults in the United States may be as high as 30 percent. It is also one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the country. As patients age, their risk of developing periodontal disease increases. Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to bone loss, tooth loss, and systemic infections. Periodontal disease, in fact, is an ongoing oral infection.

The most common causes of periodontal disease include:

Diagnosing Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is the mild stage of periodontal disease. In this stage, periodontal disease is reversible. At first, few symptoms may be present. As periodontal disease worsens, however, you may notice some of the following signs:

  • Bleeding, tender gums, tarter buildup
  • Gum recession, shifting of teeth
  • Red, irritated, and swollen gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth

If you have symptoms of gingivitis or periodontal disease, Dr. Hoover will utilize all the latest technologies and protocols to diagnose this issue or rule it out.

Technologies and protocols that may be used include:

  • Periodontal probing
  • Digital x-rays give us digitally produced pictures of your teeth and mouth
  • 3-D Cone Beam therapy to provide us with a three-dimensional image of your teeth, gums, and jawbone
  • Intraoral cameras to share personalized oral-health pictures with you
  • Panoramic x-rays to provide Dr. Hoover with a flat image of your teeth, gums, and jawbone as opposed to a curved image to help see your periodontal disease course

Periodontal Disease Treatments

Periodontal Disease Latina Woman

The foundation of our treatment plans usually begins with a thorough oral health assessment in our Orlando, FL dental office.

Following your assessment, we start scheduling a customized treatment protocol going forward.

Periodontal treatments sometimes include scaling and root planing (SRP). SRP removes tartar, plaque, and bacteria from teeth and just below the gumline to help gums reattach to the tooth structure, eliminating the pocketing that collects bacteria. Oral or topical antibiotics can assist with healing. Our water filtration system called Sterisil® ensures each rinse with our water system is bacteria free.

At NuLife Dental, our compassionate team will keep you relaxed and comfortable during all periodontal treatments. We offer nitrous oxide and other sedation choices for patients who have dental anxiety or who feel a bit nervous about their procedure. Pillows, headphones, and a music selection will help you feel relaxed while our team cares for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Invisalign right for me?

Why do I need a periodontal treatment instead of a regular dental cleaning?

Periodontal disease may be the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. At NuLife Dental, when we see early indications of periodontal disease, we act quickly to save your teeth and maintain optimal oral health.

Simply, a standard dental cleaning will not remove the bacteria or infection associated with periodontal disease.

The signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Jaw or tooth pain
  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing
  • Loose teeth
  • Swelling in the gums or  cheeks
  • Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth

Left untreated, periodontal disease not only leads to tooth loss, but it can advance into a systemic infection and spread to other areas of the body.

Periodontal treatments in our Orlando, FL dental office may include:

  • Scaling and planing—the dentist cleans away bacteria below the gum line and may apply an oral antibiotic to promote healing and gum reattachment
  • Gum surgery
  • Scheduled dental visits for ongoing treatment

At NuLife Dental, we understand how scary periodontal disease can be, but with the right treatment, even advanced periodontal disease can be halted. And we will do everything to help you through, including pain management.

We also offer television, music, headphones, blankets, pillows, and a coffee bar.
